Women in Transport Scotland celebrates IWD 2025

On Friday 7th March 2025 over 100 people gathered at J&M Murdoch site in Neilston for an unforgettable day celebrating International Women’s Day.

The event took place at the Crofthead Mill listed building, founded over 200 years ago and which employed over 1000 cotton mill workers at its peak. Joined by members and non-members from all over Scotland, attendees heard from a fantastic range of speakers including:

  • Mailys Garden - Scotland Regional Lead for Women in Transport

  • Joan Aitken OBE - former Scotland Traffic Commissioner

  • Karan Sharkey - Commercial Director at Enva

  • Karent Stuherland - Lead at Girl Torque

  • Ema Allan - providing a dedication to Mrs Margaret Murdoch, whose company celebrates its 60 years anniversary this year. Founded in 1965 by John & Margaret Murdoch, the company gradually moved from its humble beginning as a small family-run business to an expansive, varied and specialised range of vehicles.

  • Audrey Duckworth - Head of Environment at Binn Group

  • Lynne Mason - Regional Operations Manager at the Road Haulage Association

The speakers shared their experiences working in male-dominated fields and initiatives they promote to encourage greater diversity. The speeches were followed by a networking lunch.

Here is some feedback from the event:

“It was a great day spent with so many lovely and amazing women. I felt very honoured to be invited”.

“I came away so energised and inspired.”
